Real Time - Arrivals during prior 15 minutes

Fix Crossing Metric - Fix crossings are computed as a web service by analyzing the flown trajectory to identify the closest point of approach (CPA) to the meter fix. The logic handles cases when the CPA occurs between consecutive position reports and also identifies whether the aircraft passes to the left vs. right of the fix.
  • Multiple KCLT arrivals passing LEFT of ADOWN - AAL332 shows how the fix crossing time (18:04:18) is interpolated between consecutive position reports (18:03:39 and 18:04:40)
  • DAL2322 passes directly over CHPPR - Fix conformance of less than 0.05 nautical miles left or right is considered crossing "directly over" the fix.
  • AAL2030 passes 1.2 nautical miles RIGHT of SUDSY - At 17:14, the ETA was 17:45 and STA was frozen to 17:41. With the STA being earlier than the ETA, the "TBFM Airborne Delay" was -4 minutes. Ultimately, AAL2030 did not reach the fix until 17:44, making up only about a minute over the ETA that was in place when the STA became frozen.
  • SWA5132 encounters vectoring at the ZDV boundary and crosses CLARC arc on time - ETA changes visible after STA freeze. Weather to the west of KDEN.
  • Multiple flights early to meter fix arc as weather approaches KDEN from the west - Expands on example above. Weather to the west of KDEN disrupts arrivals over BGDEE and MNARK which are sent the the southeast. Many flights cross the meter fix arc early.
Missed Approach - Altitude profiles are analyzed to identify when an approach is terminated and a go-around is performed.
  • DAL1637 appears to line up for runway 3R then performs a missed approach and ultimately lands on 21L.
Circular Hold - A special case of vectoring in which the flight track crosses over itself. Computed while at least 5 nautical miles from the origin and destination.
  • SWA1432 deviates 8.8 to the LEFT of the meter fix then enters multiple circular holds while awaiting weather to clear over the airport.
Airborne Delay from Vectoring - Computed as a web service by comparing the progress along the flown trajectory against the joined route. Accounts for vectoring delays from path stretching and circular holding as well as delay reductions from shortcuts and direct-tos. Computed while at least 30 nautical miles from the origin and destination. For best results, turn on the "Vectoring" map layer and select the "Delay" time series chart.
  • 14 minutes of vectoring delay during KDFW configuration change - The aircraft enters a holding pattern at 16:20. 14 minutes later, the aircraft exits holding and shows a corresponding increase of 14 minutes in the Delay time series chart.
  • 3 minutes of delay reduction - The aircraft takes a shortcut past LOWGN and then another past BFREE for a cumulative delay savings of about 3 minutes. The total distance flown was 14 nautical miles shorter than planned.
Airspeed - Airspeed is generally not provided in position reports. It is computed as a value-added metric. This involves matching the aircraft's 4D position, altitude, and time to the encountered winds aloft. The reported groundspeed is smoothed then combined with the winds aloft to calculate the True Airspeed (TAS). The Calibrated Airspeed (CAS) is also computed via web service using the TAS and reported altitude. For best results, turn on the Winds Aloft map layer and select the "Speed" time series chart.
  • Example 1 - The reported groundspeed continues to drop as ENY3732 turns into a 100+ knot headwind over the Florida Panhandle. The valued-added TAS and CAS metrics remain relatively constant throughout cruise indicating that the conversion from reported groundspeed to airspeed is reasonable. Turn on the "Vectoring (derived)" map layer and select the "Delay" time series chart to see a delay reduction detected from a direct-to at 15:20. The two path stretching maneauvers at 16:20 and 17:00 each add 6 minutes of delay.
  • Example 2 - AAL2575 approaches the 100-knot winds aloft contour just east of New Orleans, at which point the computed headwind verifies at nearly 100 knots. Notice the reduction in headwind during each of the path stretching maneuvers.
Other Examples
Configuration change at KDFW from south to north flow - At 16:37, the final aircraft lands from the north. At 16:47, the first aircraft lands from the south. Multiple aircraft experience vectoring during the change.
Route deviation, missed approach, extra flown distance - SKW5226 from KACV deviated 14 miles from the flight plan, crossed 2 miles left of the meter fix, performed a missed approach, and flew an extra 58 miles while encountering a slight tail wind
